What can I say about
Jerry that you haven't already read? I'm not sure where to start.
I've known Jerry for about 6 years. He had captured the heart of
my youngest daughter, but I loved him and so did all the family.
Jerry was always ready to help do anything...trim bushes, help us decorate
the Christmas tree, and show up with a warm, beautiful smile and a hug
just at the right time when one was needed. Jerry and Dayna were
camp counselors together at Athens, TX where he was an inspiration to kids,
all who loved him. He was a Christian, loving, caring, and
compassionate. There are too many people today afraid to talk about
their faith, but not Jerry. He was excited about his faith in God.
To hear how he touched so many lives in a short amount of time is exceptional.
Jerry was the kind of young man you hope your daughter will meet and marry
someday. He was the puzzle piece that was missing in our family.
We will always love and miss him.
Jacki and Mike-
Jerry was so special
to all of us. We are blessed to have such sweet beautiful memories.
It's easy to see what a loving, caring person he was because he had wonderful
examples.
I remember being so happy
when I would drive up to my house after work and see Jerry's truck sitting
there. If he came over after dark, he would never ring the doorbell
in case someone was asleep. He would just lightly knock and say in
a loud whisper, "It's Jerry", which was one of my favorite things to hear.
Even though he was coming over to see my sister Dayna, we all loved it
when Jerry was around. Something about him always made you feel good.
Maybe it was his vivacious personality, his charming smile, or maybe it
was the sparkle he put in my little sister's eyes. Over the
past few years Jerry has come to mean the world to my whole family.
I know that I am lucky to have known Jerry like I did, and I am thankful
for the time I got to spend with him. I love you Jerry Don and can't wait
to see you and my Dad again one day.
I didn't know Jerry but
his smile will always come to my mind whenever I remember the bonfire tragedy.
As I read about him there was just something that seemed so special about
an average kid who had so much heart. I just can't forget him.
He won't ever be forgotten. He was an AGGIE!
In memory of your Son,
Brother, and friend who gave all he had .... he will be with Our Lord and
all God's AGGIES.

My prayers and deepest
condolences go out to Jerry's family and friends. I did not have
the blessing of knowing Jerry, but I have been deeply touched by the testimonies
I have heard from those who did. What a comfort it must be, even
in this time of deep hurt, to hear how Jerry's life and death have brought
glory to God! I can't begin to imagine the pain you must be experiencing
in your loss, but I pray that God will wrap His arms of love around you
and comfort you. And know this: the greatest tribute Jerry has received
has not been from men, but instead from His Heavenly Father, who welcomed
him into heaven saying, "Well done my good and faithful servant!"
I am so proud of my fellow Viking and brother in Christ. May God
pour out His comfort, blessings, and love on you.
Dear Family of Jerry
Self and Friends,
My family and I have
been, and will continue to, pray for you and all of our Aggie Family.
We also pray that you will be able to overlook and forgive the media hawks
who will continue to battle for the big story. Your son and your
friend was a part of something larger than any of them will ever understand
- the Aggie Family. I am a non-traditional Aggie (Class of '02) and
a parent who has witnessed this tragedy from the standpoint of a student
and a parent.
What I have seen
is a fantastically beautiful group of young people who have taught me many
things about life, young people who lived their lives to the fullest and
young people with a strong faith in God. Please know, we will always
keep you in our prayers and we are so deeply sorry for your loss.
Jerry,
Although our paths
didn't cross very often here in College Station, I will always remember
the times we spent together at Lamar. Standing together on the sidelines
of football games; declaring ourselves Student Council "Point Leaders"
and sitting with the officers for the yearbook picture; riding around in
that ugly Scout that you thought was so cool; going with you and your grandmother
to buy your new truck; sitting in my car before school singing to Jimmy
Buffett; driving as fast as we could to get to lunch and only taking five
minutes to eat; church lunches where you wouldn't leave until all the food
was gone; sleeping in my parents' recliners in the afternoons; Thursday
night pre-game meals at Olive Garden; planning to live together at A&M
until you decided to join the Corps; and so much more. I always looked
forward to those chance meetings on campus or at the mall where you would
greet me with your famous smile and we would talk like we had never been
apart. Whenever I would see a maroon Dodge, I would look to see if
it was you, but it never was. There is nothing I regret more than
losing touch with you, Jerry, but I know I will see you again soon.
You were a truly special person and I will strive to live my life the way
you lived yours-with a deep faith in God and a love for all. Your
spirit will burn in my heart forever.
I had the privilege of
meeting Jerry only once, but every time I think about that time, it makes
me laugh. I went to the first football game this year with a senior
in Jerry's outfit. We were squeezing through the aisle to get to
our seats, and when we were almost there, someone stopped us to say hello,
and then made a few jokes to me about my date. I couldn't help myself
from laughing. It turned out that my seat was right next to Jerry,
who had made the jokes about his senior, my date. I laughed throughout
the whole first half of the game from all the jokes he was cracking off
the top of his head. Right after halftime I decided to go to the
concession stand but I didn't want to bring my camera, so Jerry said he
would watch it for me. I didn't think twice about leaving it with
him. Anyhow, a few weeks later when I got my film developed there
were these two random pictures of Jerry pulling out senior privileges with
his friends. It was too funny. I couldn't believe they had
done that.
I look at those pictures
all the time and wish that I had gotten to meet Jerry a few more times.
He touched so many lives, and everyone has something positive to say about
him. I know that he was a wonderful person, and I am so glad that
he is an Aggie Angel that looks out for the rest of us Ags!
I was introduced to Jerry
Self before a yell by my former boyfriend. All I remember about Jerry was
his huge smile and that his buddy said he was an awesome guy. Even
though I didn't really know him, I want to let his family know that I will
never forget him or the sacrifice he made for our school. It's true...our
12 Angels will live forever in Aggie Spirit.
I've never had the opportunity
to meet Jerry but I still pray for his family and the families of those
who died in the bonfire. With the impact that his passing away made
on those here at Lamar, I truly know that he was someone very special in
the eyes of all. I just continue to pray for the teachers here and
at A&M and for all his friends that truly got to know him. I
just believe that he is in Heaven now with our Father.
