I had the pleasure of knowing Jerry for two and a half of the quickest years of my life. As a Corps sophomore, he was one of my fish. Our fish became like little brothers to us, and I was perhaps closest to Jerry. He had a smile that was contagious. It was heartfelt. Jerry was one of the most genuine, honest people I have ever met. Even when things didn't
go the way he had planned them, he knew God would have His Will. I thank God for the time I got to spend with Jerry Self. It doesn't seem long enough to my finite mind, but I pray that we can spend eternity together in Heaven.
Knowing Jerry is a testament of God's Love for me and for many here on Earth.

I did not know Jerry by name, and I probably would not have recognized him on the street. But a smile like that you can never forget. He was one of my Boys, and I miss them all so much.

I did not know Jerry Self as a person, but the stories of him as a Lamar Viking will not die.  I remember very vividly the mood around the football locker room when we found out one of the family had passed away. Not many of us knew who he was, but that did not matter.  As a Lamar Viking, you are taught to respect all who have worn the uniform before you, and helped build the tradition you are apart of.  As we went into the SGP playoff game, the spirit of Jerry Self hung over the Lamar side like an angel.  We
decided before the game that we would give everything we had and play our hearts out
for Jerry Self.  And though we did not win, we knew Jerry would be proud, because we had given all we had.

Unfortunately, I never had the opportunity to meet Jerry Self.... But, following the tragedy at Texas A&M, I quickly learned what a special young man we all had lost.... All too often life simply doesn't seem fair.... Those that seem to shine so brightly are often the ones whose light is extinguished so prematurely.... Having lost a little sister years ago to cancer is something I've learned to deal with, but, likely will never fully accept..... I'm certain that Jerry's family is dealing with a similar grief..... But, at the same time, I hope that Jerry's family knows the support system that is working on their behalf.... That those of us, best considered strangers, still share their grief, keep them in our prayers, but, remain confident that from every one of life's negative's,
is born a multiple of positives.... The endless number of e-mails and good wishes on behalf of Jerry is certainly proof positive of that.....

I did not know Jerry, or do I even go to A&M, But after reading all the letters that were sent to you I believe he was a good son and a good friend to a lot of people.  Even though I did not know him I just needed to write something to you all telling you how sorry I am for what happened. I hope one day to go to A&M and be an Aggie and be part of the tradition. Jerry and everyone else is in all of our hearts forever.  Again I am truly sorry.

From growing up with him at Shackelford and Lamar I learned many things about Jerry.  From playing football with him I remember him as a scrapper who played with a big heart.  From growing up around him I remember a guy with a great sense of humor who always had that huge grin on his face.  I never remember him ever having trouble getting along with anyone.  He was truly a genuine person who I feel fortunate to have known.  My heart and prayers goes out to his family and friends. We will all miss him but I know he is in Heaven right now.

I read the Dallas newspaper article this morning about Jerry and stared at his picture for a long while.  I didn't know Jerry or his family, but as a single mom with one very loving son, the pain hit so close to home for me  My son and I watched all the news about the bonfire collapse, and we remember Jerry from the stories.  We just went to the tribute website and read everything about him.  I wanted to let his family know how much we think and pray for them, and hope that you can soon find peace and comfort in your lives.   All the best to you.

Mr. and Mrs. Self, I have kept you in my prayers, this whole time I have wondered if you were alright, but then I know that you are, as a parent myself I qualify as knowing what it is like to encounter anything, that will affect, or harm our children, but as I stated, I know that you will be fine, I will continue to pray for you to regain  your strenght, and I will pray that the void, will smooth out in time.
Sincerely,
