Vikings and Vols face off in key playoff race matchup

Varsity Preview

The Series: The Vikings lead the series, 25-7, with a 12-4 edge at Cravens Field.

Last Week: Both teams would like to forget last week. Bowie tumbled from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 33-29 loss to Arlington High, while Lamar fell to Mansfield 35-21.

Dishin’ it out: Lamar QB Chance Fuller has completed 88 passes for 1273 yards through seven games this year. He has four receivers (Dayton Dubs- 18, Matthew Shaw- 15, Devon Wright- 13, and Jalen Jones- 12) with double-digit receptions. Both Dubs and Shaw are tied for the team lead with four TD receptions. Lamar has three receivers (Dubs- 285, Shaw- 248, and Wright- 212) with at least 200 yards receiving.

D-FENCE!: The Lamar defense has been remarkable in keeping opponents out of the end zone this season. The Vikings rank sixth in DFW and first in the district in opponent points per game, allowing only 18.7 points through seven games. They also recorded the 61st shutout in program history- and the first since 2013- earlier this season against North Crowley. The defense is led by seniors Jalan McDonald, Lakendrick Simpson, and University of Kansas-commit Kyron Johnson.

Return to Sender: Senior Kolby Underwood has recorded four non-offensive touchdowns this season, good for third overall in team scoring. Underwood has returned two kickoffs for scores, as well as an interception and punt return.

Friday Night Lights: Friday night’s game will be a “Pink Out” in support of those who have battled Breast Cancer. All fans are encouraged to wear pink and the team will be sporting special pink accessories for the game.

In addition to the Pink Out, the Lamar Viking Band will host the first ever Lamar Band Tailgate. The tailgate starts at 4:00 PM and will be located on the east side of the school, next to the Cravens Field parking lot. The menu includes tacos, nachos, and bean burritos.

Finally, it is also community night at Cravens. Youth cheerleaders and drill teams will be on the field, and the Nichols and Shackelford bands will be playing along with the Lamar Viking Band. All fans are encouraged to participate in the Viking spirit tunnel at 7:15 PM. Line up outside of the locker room entrance to welcome the Vikings to the field!
