Varsity 2017
2017 x Varsity

Coach Corner

Our pre-district schedule was designed to prepare us for district play & I believe that competing at a high level versus tough competition will lead to success in district and post season play. Our Freshman Gold tied 0-0 & Navy tied 38-38 while our JV lost in a defensive struggle 8-0. The Varsity fell 21-17 against a SGP team that went two rounds deep in the playoffs last year & have 16 returning lettermen. I was very excited about the growth our Varsity had from Week 1 to Week 2 & this growth is a tribute to our players and coaches believing in the process and taking 1 play at a time. While our offense had several bright spots we are still searching for some more consistently in our balanced attack. Special teams need some fine tuning in regards to our coverage teams but the kicking game was strong. Proud of the growth for the defensive unit, especially in the 2nd half, as we held an athletic and speedy SGP attack to only 5 possessions in the half. After a few halftime adjustments we forced a fumble & recovered, forced a turnover on downs, stopped a fake FG attempt & forced a punt. I pay tribute to all this growth because of the planning from coaches, belief from players, a good week of practice and playing with better effort than the previous Friday.
Our next challenge will not be any easier as Keller Central is yet another team returning over 17 letterman & made the playoffs last year. Central has played the last two Thursdays & are in a routine of Thursday night games as we are preparing on a short week…another challenge but I am confident that our players will regain their focus on this opportunity. Our Freshman Gold & Navy teams will travel to the campus of Keller Central on Wednesday & will play at 6:00pm and 7:30pm. Our JV teams will make their debut at Cravens this Wednesday with Gold at 6:00pm & Navy at 7:30pm.  The Varsity will travel to Keller ISD Stadium on Thursday for a 7:00pm kickoff.
I also want to take the opportunity to thank all the booster club members and parents that have assisted thus far this season. Viking Fest was a huge success & was only accomplished because of all the volunteers that participated in such a fun event. Thank you to those who have helped at concessions and spirit sales for the last two weeks at the freshman games. A big shout out to everyone that assist with the inflatable, flags, halftime snacks, goodie bags, pregame meals & team feed. Our players and coaches recognize your efforts and you are making a positive impact on your son’s life as well as the Lamar Football Program.
